FAQ

Below are some questions you might have related to pelvic pain and exercise.

Note: The answers and information given are not intended to be taken as professional advice. Please seek the advice of your doctor or health professional.

If I have a pelvic pain disorder, is it still possible for me to exercise?

Yes. Some forms of exercise might not work for you, but if some exercises DO work for you...then take those and use them. Chances are slim that someone's going to create the PERFECT exercise DVD, custom made, just for you (although we are trying). Keep compiling your own set of "exercises that work" and before you know it...you'll have a workout that works for you.

Someone told me I should stay away from pilates if I have pelvic pain. Is that true?

Not necesarrily. Everyone is different. Everyone has different pain & comfort levels...different abilities & disabilities. People with pelvic pain actually do participate in traditional pilates. Some can not, though. Don't necessarily let another person's pain be your pain. One person with pelvic pain can do jumping jacks. Another person can't even sit comfortably in a chair. If a workout is designed in such a way as to not exacerbate your symptoms, then the workout can work for you...even if that workout is pilates-inspired.

Can I just jump into this workout, or should I start out slow?
With all new forms of exercise that you try out, start out slow and be cautious...then build up. This is especcially important when you have a pelvic pain disorder. Give yourself time to understand what your body is feeling. If your body doesn't respond in a negative way, then build up to focus even a bit more on that exercise.
But what about pilates' emphasis on abdominal exercises?

Why is it so difficult for me to find exercise content for people with pelvic pain?

How does someone with a pelvic pain disorder keep from being discouraged about staying fit?

First of all, don't take your cues from media. Don't try to be someone else. Don't unhealthily judge and compare yourself to others. You have your own unique body with its own set of unique needs. Always remember that exercise is not just about looking good, but it's about FEELING good. There's not just one exercise workout for everyone, either. Be encouraged that there are many different types of exercises that you can do. With some help from instructors that understand pelvic floor disfunction, you can do many things in a modified fashion. It is my goal to keep exploring different exercise ideas that can be modified for us (remember...I suffer with pelvic pain too).

What other types of exercise can be done if I have pelvic pain?

Do you have any general advice for people with pelvic pain trying to stay healthy?

Remember - "health" is: staying in shape, eating right, feeding your mind and spirit, relationships and helping others. Some of these areas are extremely difficult to keep in check when you suffer from chronic pelvic pain. Make sure, though, to never over-emphasize the importance of any one of these areas over another. And be sure that there is much more to your life's "health" than just physical exercise. One thing is for sure - if one of the above mentioned areas is extremely out of balance in your life, you won't feel healthy.
