How to Stop Putting Your Life on Hold and Start Living Now

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I’ll do that when…”?

When work settles down. When you feel more confident. When you lose the weight. When the children are older. When you have more money. When you finally feel like you've got yourself together.

It can seem harmless. There will always be a reason to wait a little longer.

But sometimes, without realising it, we can spend so much time preparing for the life we want that we forget we're already living it.

If you've been putting your own wants, dreams or enjoyment on hold, you're not failing. You may simply have become very good at prioritising everything and everyone else.

The good news is that you don't need to change your whole life to start living differently. You can begin with one small choice today.

Notice where you're waiting for permission

Putting your life on hold doesn't always look dramatic.

Sometimes it's the little things.

You keep the beautiful clothes for “special occasions”. You don't book the trip because the timing isn't quite right. You keep talking about taking up something you've always wanted to try. You tell yourself you'll start once you're more confident.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I constantly telling myself I'll do “one day”?
  • What am I waiting to feel before I begin?
  • Whose permission am I actually waiting for?
  • What would I choose if I stopped needing everything to be perfect first?

You may discover that the obstacle isn't always your circumstances. Sometimes it's the belief that you need to become a different, more confident or more prepared version of yourself before you're allowed to begin.

You don't.

Stop making happiness dependent on the next milestone

It's easy to fall into the habit of “I'll be happy when…”

I'll feel better when I lose weight.

I'll relax when work gets easier.

I'll enjoy myself when I have more money.

I'll feel confident when I finally know what I'm doing.

But there will always be another milestone.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't have goals. Goals can give your life direction and purpose. The difference is whether you're allowing yourself to experience your life while you're working towards them.

You can want change and still appreciate where you are.

You can have ambitions and still rest.

You can be working on yourself and still enjoy the woman you are today.

Your life doesn't have to begin once everything is sorted.

Start with one small act of courage

You don't need to make a huge life-changing decision.

In fact, starting smaller can be much more powerful.

Think of something you've been postponing and ask:

“What's the smallest version of this I could do today?”

Maybe it's:

  • booking the class you've been thinking about

  • taking yourself for a walk instead of waiting for someone to join you

  • wearing the dress you've been saving

  • making the phone call

  • writing the first page

  • reaching out to someone you miss

  • putting ten minutes aside for something that brings you joy

You might feel nervous. That's normal.

We often imagine courage as feeling completely confident and certain. In reality, courage can feel like taking the next step while your stomach is doing little somersaults.

You don't have to wait until you're fearless.

Let yourself be here for your actual life

Living more fully isn't necessarily about adding more to your already busy schedule.

Sometimes it's about noticing what is already here.

The first sip of your morning coffee.

A conversation that makes you laugh.

The warmth of the sun on your skin.

A walk without checking your phone.

Music you love.

A quiet moment when nobody needs anything from you.

These moments can seem ordinary, but they are your life.

And perhaps that's the shift: instead of constantly asking, “When will my real life begin?”, start asking, “How can I be more present for the life I'm living today?”

You don't need a perfect plan.

You don't need to have everything figured out.

You don't need to wait until some future version of you arrives.

A few gentle practices to try

Today, choose one thing you've been putting off and make it smaller.

Instead of “I'll start exercising properly,” book one class.

Instead of* “One day I'll take that trip,”* research the dates.

Instead of “I need to completely change my life,” ask what would make today feel a little more like yours.

And give yourself permission to enjoy something without earning it first.

You don't have to be more productive, more successful, thinner, calmer or more healed before you're allowed to enjoy your life.

You are already in it.
